What is wrong with Rahman’s CWG Anthem?

ar-rahman Ok there are many points to look upon here and also many which can actually be ignored. First of all this whole story of pointing fingers at one of India’s greatest musicians began with respected people from the Indian Music Industry, Bollywood and others raising their voices in public, criticizing A. R. Rahman’s Commonwealth Games Theme song. Not only them, even the “wise” politicians and many fans too!

Now here are my main points about this issue:

  • Anyone can criticize. But these famous faces from the music industry shouldn’t have come out in public to say these things, after all the mess CWG has been in already. After all it’s the song for the people to enjoy, and not for a music competition. By making statements like this in public, forces the common man to re-think on what he’s listening… unnecessarily.
  • Many say that Rahman has been over confident and that’s what led to this not-so-great song. Well, whoever said that are losers! Just like how Bishen Singh Bedi questioned Muralitharan’s talent, in the same way these “judgy” musicians should take a hike! Commenting in public against Rahman won’t win them an Oscar! You can give your valid criticism about the technicalities or texture of the music… that’s fine. But please don’t just say things like over-confident, show-off and all that… Cmon!! What u think Rahman composed this song for time-pass?
  • So what should we do about it? Nothing!!! A song is made, we can hear, lets enjoy it! We need not worry about who said what. We can judge for ourselves. What about the `5 Crores spent just for this one song? Cmon! This is CWG… so much money is already being wasted for other things… let Rahman take the rest at least! Lol.

Shakira-Waka-Waka-SongLet’s take a peek into the “music” of the song:

  • Everyone did this as soon as they heard the song… and that is compare it with Shakira’s Waka Waka and Knaan’s Waving Flag. Fine… comparison is natural. The only difference I found among these two songs and the CWG theme is that, CWG Theme is not catchy! Almost the entire song of Waka Waka is catchy. So is the “and then it goes back” of Waving Flag. There’s nothing like that here. It should’ve had something like the Korbo Lorbo Jeetbo of the Kolkata Knight Riders Theme.
  • I don’t like the lyrics so much either. Things like “Play o jiyo heyo let’s go” are umm… not… so… nice…. Now theknaan song is called Swagatham but there isn’t a mention of that word literally in the song. So… I dunno…?!
  • The song for me, is very slow for a Sports Anthem. It starts out slow and nice… but then it still remains slow and suddenly goes to a rock version with electric guitar and all! I love the last part, the Bhangra beat… just love it. I just wish the entire song had things like that. Dandiya, Marathi beats will not only pull us, but even the non-Indians as well.
  • Many say that this is not very ‘Indian’. I don’t think Waving Flag or Waka Waka were completely African??! They had some pure African parts and so does the CWG Theme with an Indian touch of course! The theme must be International… that it is…
  • The song is perfect for a music video. If the song was released for the first time in a video, like Waka Waka people would’ve liked it more. Don’t you agree?

So what’s my verdict? Hmmm… I don’t like the song so much actually… except the last Bhangra part. I was expecting something better, given the amazing work Rahman showed in the recently released Raavan. To tell you the truth, I hum the tune all the time now… I think even though it’s not so catchy, it will somehow catch us with time. Just missing a real good music video for this one and the feel of CWG was already saddening with all the controversy. All in all, it’s a nice song, not his best works (Jai Ho wasn’t either)… but nice.

P.S.: Waka Waka is not the original song. It’s the new adaptation of the original Cameroonian Zangalewa. Interesting to see how Cameroon and Columbia have got the world dancing to Waka Waka.

What are your views on the CWG Theme?

Who is judging American Idol?

steven_tylerIn my previous post of  Reality of Reality Show Judges I had mentioned about the not-so-big-deal exit of Ellen DeGeneres. Well after Simon and Paula’s exit, there was such a mix up to get a stabilized judging panel… and I think Idol is settling down to a strong three-judge panel… probably better than ever!

Steven Tyler is the new judge on American Idol!!! I was stunned when I heard this news that a superstar like Steven would now be on the panel of one of my favourite shows! The lead singer Aerosmith would now be judging potential country, rock, and other young singers of various genres. It’s going to be an awesome panel I guess, but you never know… I think this is weirdest combination of judges... and I have a feeling its going to work out well. For the first time in all the reality shows I’ve watched sojlo far, Tyler is the first ‘Legend’ to be on the judge’s seat! Resurrecting from drug abuse and so many mess ups in his life, this superstar is adding another entry to his already super-esteemed music resume.

Are Randy and Kara going to stay put on the panel?? I don’t think so!! Reports say that Kara has been shown the door after just two seasons on nigel-lythgoe[4]the show (she bores me!). Since Ellen and Simon called it quits too one more person was need to complete the trio. Randy, Steven, and as you might have already heard the… Jennifer Lopez???!! Wow… that would be cool… the judge panel turning into a superstar brigade!

To bring to your mind, remember Nygel Lythgoe from So You Think You Can Dance?? He’s the co-founder of American Idol and has already been tagged as Nasty Nygel for his inhuman taunts in shows US and UK. It would be awesome for him to take Simon’s place, coz I think he’s just that good… or worse! That being said, I don’t think he would exactly do that, coz there’s no way he’s leaving So You Think You Can Dance. Don’t think the audience would want to see him everywhere!

Anyways, for now its Randy and Steven. Finding JLo on the panel is on shaky grounds for quite a few reasons, including her ‘major’ demands. Tyler was content with his place, provided he gets to wear all the bling, the jackets and the scarf! :-)

Sex on the dance floor

You might have watched many reality shows for singing, dancing and other talents. Here’s one instance that happened on the dance stage… SEX! Yep! You heard rite… in probably the best dance dance reality show ever on TV, So You Think You Can Dance, the audience watched live SEX for four consecutive seasons. It was sex, sexy and very sexual… you’ll know what I’m talking about when you watch these videos… and yes… PG and 18+ required! Check out the first video. Season 2 saw the first launch of… SEX!

Haha. So you watched the above video? How was  it? Did you feel… the SEX??!! Now You got to give it to David’s determination… or if you want to call that his foolishness… he was back in Season 3 and his mom Mrs. Sex had more to a verbal argument with the judge too! Check it out here.

SEX comes back in Season 4. This time the judges get real or at least try to get real. SEX (David) is living in a world of myth and the judges try their best to bring him back… but hey… he’s SEX… he’s the best!

Finally, to put an end to SEX’s increasing popularity comes another warrior… Leo… from Ukraine. The judges find that Leo and SEX could have a stand off… and they do! Leo and SEX take it on the dance floor in The Battle in Seattle. This is considered one of the greatest battles in history ever! LOL.

So how was it… who did you think should have won… Leo or SEX??!! Just like Nygel, I think SEX should have won. Its great to see creations like SEX (David). It amazes me about the kind of people that have walked the earth.

Cancer: The Growing Threat…

melissa_adeThis post is extracted from dancetrance, my exclusive dance blog. This post isn’t exactly about dance, but the emotion that the following dance piece had inflicted on all of us is unforgettable. I was not only impressed by the art and skill with which Tyce Diorio had choreographed that amazing and sacred “Breast Cancer routine”, but also the overflowing emotion that the piece spewed out. Melissa and Ade danced to this beautiful piece in So You Think You Can Dance, Season 5. I know this routine is a year old now, but since I had just started my dance blog less than a month ago, I had to make a mention of this.

I have added this video in our YouTube Channel’s Special Playlist and you can view it by clicking the image above. The other reason that I wrote this post is simply to show more awareness towards this growing threat of cancer. I lost my uncle and my grandfather to lung cancer. My grandmother, my aunt, two of my friend’s relatives are suffering from cancer of one or the other type. I cannot understand what precautions do we need to take. Well, the obvious may be to stop excessive smoking, etc. But what else can we do to prevent cancer other than lung cancer? What did they have to do to avoid it? we just can’t figure it out! All I can say is we must keep up hope and keep praying. Whenever we find someone in cancer we must be strong and share our strength with them.
